I am a fully qualified teacher and a native Spanish speaker. I am qualified as a primary teacher, educational counsellor and a specialist Spanish teacher, though I have chosen to focus on the latter in recent years.
I am back in Spain after a while living in United Kingdom and have just completed my role as a Spanish Language Assistant at a secondary school there.I am happy to say that my experience there was most enjoyable and will stand me in good stead for the future. My role entailed the planning and delivery of sound, practical, communicative lessons, developing the students´ speaking skills and imbuing an understanding of Spanish and Latin American culture. At the end of the course, I focused on maximizing my students’ final exam performance. I worked mostly with A Level students, supporting their speaking and knowledge of the syllabus, but my role also included Year 10 and 11, assisting throughout their curricula, with an emphasis on their speaking skills. For A Level students, I provided extra lessons in translation as required, in particular from English to Spanish, alongside advice for their essays using specific writing skills (how to extend ideas and textual organization).
I have always advocated the judicious use of authentic materials, including short films, print and TV news, photos, etc., always ice-breaking and contextualizing with careful consideration. My experience of teaching Spanish began during my training as a specialist Spanish teacher in Madrid, where I had the fortunate opportunity to teach real classes with adults. Subsequently, I volunteered with the International Civil Service in Madrid, teaching teenagers and adults, where I gained a more complete vision of how to teach Spanish for specific purposes at a wide range of levels. I have a strong and long-standing interest in working with emotions. I believe that they are crucial to the learning of a foreign language; starting to express emotions and feelings is a useful indicator of learners’ progress. I can proudly say that my students are highly motivated to understand and appreciate Spanish culture and to become fluent, starting from very relaxed and informal conversation, working gradually toward more formal discussions about society, politics and cultural issues.
I consider myself an empathetic, patient and enthusiastic teacher. I strive to foster a respectful but friendly environment in the classroom, since in my experience this is a good way to make students feel comfortable and cultivate an attitude conducive to learning.
